MORE PATTERNED DAYLILIES!

I am trying to catch up on posting some of my favorite pictures from this daylily season and I have a lot more pictures of patterned tetraploid daylilies to share.  My hybridizing has shifted gears over to tet. patterns.  No disrespect to diploid patterns.  Because of my Moldovan and Hanson influences, I have always preferred tetraploids.  Let's get started.  The beautiful patterned daylily above is Dan Hansen's 2013 introduction Debra Jorgensen.  This pattern really caught my eye this year.  It's currently reblooming in my garden right now.  Hope you enjoy the picture show.

TEETH!

I like to think I live in the teeth capital of the United States.....which is the state of Ohio.  It is such a blessing to be able to drive (not fly) to Jamie Gossard's, Mike Holmes, John Benz, or Tom Polston's at the drop of a hat.  I did manage to get to Jamie Gossard's Heavenly Gardens this year and saw some really cool toothy daylilies.  The purple seedling at the top of the page is one of Jamie's seedlings I fell in love with. The cross for this seedling is Dragon Fang X Rosy Spiketail.  Here's some more toothy daylilies from my garden and Jamie's garden this year that I think are in a class all their own.

PATTERNS!!!

Well, it's been too long since I posted on my blog.  I was all set last March to post all these great pictures and one of my flash drives malfunctioned.  It had a LOT of my pictures from the previous year and from places I've visited.
This year has been a lot of fun, but not without it's ups and downs.  I still have to battle the local deer in the neighborhood.  I use deterrents to keep them from eating the daylilies.  I've probably lost about 5 to 7 buds, which is a miracle given the amount of daylilies I grow.  My hybridizing focus has been patterns.  More specifically tetraploid pattern breeding.  Here are some of the daylilies I am growing and breeding with.  The patterned daylilies at the top of the page are Dan Trimmer's Waves of Joy. One of my favorite patterned daylilies.
The daylily above is a seedling of mine out of Get Jiggy.
The daylily above is Ripples and Reflections from Mort Morss.
The daylily above is Ted Petit's, So Many Ripples.
The daylily above is Ted Petit's Cobalt Rings.
This daylily above is a seedling from Dan Robarts.
The daylily above Di Decaire's Four Beasts In One.  Another favorite.
This daylily above is a seedling of mine out of the daylily Steve Moldovan.
The daylily pictured above is Pat Stamile's Get Jiggy.
The daylily above is Ted Petit's Zoe Allegra.
The daylily pictured above is a seedling of mine out of Jerry Hyatt.
The daylily pictured above is a seedling of mine out of Desire of Nations.  I hope you enjoyed this weeks segment.  I will try to post more when things slow down this winter.  Thanks for checking in.

Crintonic Gardens....the daylilies of Curt Hanson

Having lived two doors down from Curt Hanson for eight years and living only 10 minutes away now has given me the pleasure of watching Curt hybridize since 1999.  I believe Curt is in his 60's now and he has hybridized for 26+ years.  His first introduction was Ocean Rain back in 1987.  Curt has given a lot of his time to organizing daylily events and helping young hybridizers such as myself, get started in their desire to learn how it's done.  I find that Curt's daylilies have amazing plant habit replete with awesome bud count, branching, and height.  Featured at the top of the page is a couple of garden shots.  Below are some of my favorites from the earlier part of the season photographed in early July.  Curt is making some really cool advances in sculpted daylilies.  Here is a sampling:

Pictured above is Acquired Tastes, introduced in 2010.

Pictured above is Lust without you.

Pictured above is Mork and Mindy.  Nice melon color.

Pictured above is Jerry Hyatt, and excellent daylily out of Tet. Trahlyta.

Pictured above is Articulate Matrix.  An excellent patterned daylily.  I hope to feature more on Curt's daylilies in the weeks to come.

Moldovan, Woodhall gardens this past summer.

A summer isn't a summer without a visit to Moldovan, Woodhall gardens in Avon, Ohio.  This past summer some of Steve Moldovan's last daylily seedlings came into peak bloom.  Roy Woodhall wanted to make sure Steve's final crosses got lined out so he dug up the bed directly behind the house and lined out all of Steve's seedlings there.  You could really see some neat stuff going on in that bed and right next to it was a nice bed of my friend, Wayne Listkowski's daylily seedlings.  I'm sure Wayne will have some intros coming from that bed.  Anyway, featured at the very top of the page is a picture of some of the bloom coming from that bed.  Pictured right below it was a collection of some of Steve's best blooms out of that bed.  You can see in some of the purples how the patterns are beginning to evolve more, mostly coming from Steve's namesake daylily.  Roy was always very kind in showing me around the garden and making sure I knew the pedigree's of every flower I had in the car.  I think Steve and Roy have one of the most detailed stud
books I have ever seen.  There is something to be said for keeping good records!  Well, I hope you enjoy the daylilies below as much as I did that day.

Pictured above is Steve's introduction Evening Eye Shadow.  Very nice!

Above is a Steve Moldovan seedling out of Piece of Sky.  Interesting stippling!

Pictured above is the introduction, Nanny Button Cap.

The photo above is a fine purple Moldovan seedling.

Finally, one last unique Moldovan seedling.  I hope to share some pictures from Curt Hanson's garden in the coming weeks.

It's been a long winter!

Daylily Friends,

It sure has been a long winter.  You are probably wondering why I haven't posted in so long.  Well, for starters I was using a 10 year old computer and it was just too slow to do what I needed to do.  Out with the old and in with the new.  I now have a newer computer, maybe not new but at least only 5 years old and it seems so much faster.  Anyway, how about some pictures?  At the top of the page is a picture of my front yard.  Uggghhhh!!!  It was taken mid February.  So far Cleveland, Ohio has had 72+ inches of snow for the season.  I think I've probably gotten more.  Not only one of snowiest winters, but also probably one of the coldest I can remember.  The photo below it shows the seeds I had planted prior to winter beginning.  I swear the week after I planted those seeds the snow started and it's the last I've seen of the ground.  Snow is starting to melt, so I'm looking forward to spring in about a month.  (knock on wood.)  That's about it for now.  A few more pics below.

Photo above is Cosmic Blast from Jeff Salter.  This bloomed at the end of the season and I wasn't able to use it.

Pictured above is Mister Butters from Judy Davisson.  I love this clump shot and in my mind this is what I've been waiting all winter to see bloom.  I will try and post a few more daylily pics in the weeks to come before another season starts.  Hope you all have had a safe winter season.
