Moldovan's Gardens 1966 catalog introduction.

I first met Steve Moldovan and Roy Woodhall at a presentation they were giving at Canterbury Creek Gardens back in 1999.  After they were done talking, I met with them out in the parking lot and asked them questions for 30 minutes or so. Steve asked if I would like to visit his garden during peak bloom? Of course I jumped on the opportunity.  That's the first year I got to see Moldovan's Gardens in person. To give you a little background about Moldovan's Gardens, Steve Moldovan bought the property at 38830 Detroit rd. in Avon, Ohio in 1959. Steve Moldovan was 21 years old when he and his mother, Mary Moldovan moved into the property at 38330 Detroit.  Steve hybridized Iris, daylilies, hostas, and peonies.  The house was built in 1949 and sat on 4.14 acres. Steve Moldovan hybridized there for 47 years.  Steve passed away at the age of 68 on July 14th, 2006. Roy Woodhall, planted Steve's final crosses in 2007 and took care of the gardens until his passing on January 6th, 2015.  Roy was 67.  Steve Moldovan introduced 469 daylilies according to the American Daylily Society database, and Roy Woodhall introduced 69 daylilies over their 50 years of hybridizing. Here are the catalog covers from the years 1966 through 2006 that I have copies of.  Special thanks to Curt Hanson for sharing these with me.

In 2007 through 2011 all of Moldovan's Garden's daylilies were introduced through a website that Mike Holmes designed. Special thanks also goes to Mike Anders who shared some images of some of the missing catalogs I was looking for.  I didn't get every year, but hopefully you enjoyed this trip down memory lane.  A visit to Moldovan's Gardens during peak bloom was always a highlight of my week during each summer I went there.  The property was sold after Roy's passing and the daylily fields gradually disappeared sadly. I had always wished a daylily person had bought the property to carry on with the gardens but it wasn't meant to be.  Make sure you stay tuned for the next segment which will feature pictures from Moldovan's Gardens and Steve and Roy from the past.  Some really great pictures.  Thanks for stopping in.
